Music Festival Season
January 3rd 2007 04:44
January is a great month. With Big Day Out hitting our shores there are music acts aplenty to see. Between the BDO and all the sideshows, there are so many bands I want to see that I literally don't know where to start! To help get it straight in my mind, I thought I'd put together my picks of the upcoming tours that are worthwhile:
1. Big Day Out - With a line up that includes: Tool, Violent Femmes, Lily Allen, The Killers, The John Butler Trio, Kasabian, My Chemical Romance, Eskimo Joe, Muse, Jet, The Spazzys and The Vines just to name a few why wouldn't you want to go to Big Day Out?
Well, the answer is....if you're like me, you fucked about too long and they sold out before you could buy your ticket. However, there are still tickets for some shows. Go to the Big Day Out website for more details. Or you can try your luck on eBay where tickets are selling for around $200 a pop.
At least, most of the artists are doing sideshows during January, so if like me you missed out. You can still see your favourite bands.
2. And the only show on the list that is non-negotiable, I HAVE to see is, My Chemical Romance - January 29th at Festering...I mean, Festival Hall. Tix $56.50 bf available from Ticketmaster.
Black Parade was my favourite album of 2005, and their previous albums Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and I Brought You My Bullets You Brought Me Your Love also kicked ass. Even though this is an all-ages gig, and I hate Festival Hall, I will be off to this show.
3. Peaches & Herms - January 30th & 31st at The Prince Band Room (Tix $50 available from The Prince Band Room.
I love Peaches. Her electro/dance/manic/crass/rude crazy music is great.
To see wherelse in Australia Peaches is doing sideshows go to the Big Day Out sideshows site.
4. Tenacious D - January 19th at Festival Hall. Tix $72 bf, available from Ticketmaster.
Ladies, if you're single and looking for men, this is definitely a show to go to. I saw Tenacious D at the HiFi Bar the last time they were in Melbourne and there was approximately 15-20 guys to each girl.
Of course, boys aren't the only reason to see Tenacious D. Their music is juvenile and purile, but damn can Jack Black sing. Oh yeah, and he's hot. I just love them.
5. Muse - January 30 & 31st at Festival Hall. Tix $82.90 bf, available from Ticketmaster. For those in Sydney, sorry but their shows are already sold out.
I didn't love Muse's latest album as much as I loved Absolution, but Black Holes & Revelations is still a damn fine album and this band rocks. I love Matt Belamy. They are definitely worthwhile seeing. Tix are still available for their shows, though they are all-ages gigs.
6. Lily Allen - January 29th at The Metro. Tix $54.40 bf available from Ticketmaster.
I love Lily Allen's pop/reggae sound. Alright, Still is a great album, and it'll be interesting to see how she performs live. Unfortunately I'll be at the My Chemical Romance show and won't get to see her act. If anyone goes along to see Lily, let me know how it is.
7. Violent Femmes - 31st January at The Corner Hotel. Tix $40 bf available from the venue, call on (03) 9427-7300.
Just for old times sake, who wouldn't want to see the Femmes and go off to a bit of Blister in the Sun live???
8. Dallas Crane - 19th January at The Prince Band Room. Tix $20 bf, available fromThe Prince Band Room.
At $20, this is a great value gig. Dallas Crane are a great live band to see.
An honourable mention also goes to The Killers....but as all their shows are sold out, I didn't think I'd tease you by listing them.
Whew, I've got some tough decisions about who I want to see in January!!

I don't know, I've always considered My Chemical Romance a bit emo. I don't like emo. But I love them. I can't explain it. Album of the year? Nah, album of the CENTURY !!
This is our chemical romance !! I'll probably won't see you at the concert, seeing as you live in the lower-ranked liveable city, Sydney, but I will say hi in spirit.

I'm seeing Muse in Jan and it's the same night as Lily who I would love to see.....I hope someone can tell me what she was like!!
Is anyone going to the V Festival in March with The Pixies, Groove Armada and other fantastic bands? Seeing The Pixies will be the highlight of my year. I saw them years ago in Manchester and nearly died from the force of the crowd, but it was all worth it

I also SO want guitar hero. I took some guitar lessons a few years back (I decided it was never too late to be a rock star). Did lessons for a year and a half....and still can't play. So I think guitar hero will be the way to go!
Tracy - I SO want to see the Pixies. I've always wanted to see them.....that could be the highlight of my life. So I have to go to that festival.
I had a friend who saw Muse last time they were in Melbourne and apparently they kicked arse! I think I'd like to see them too.
