NME's Top Albums of 2006
December 11th 2006 22:40
It's the time of the year when everyone is looking back at the year that was 2006. And what a year it's been. There was the Commonwealth Games, Steve Irwin & Peter Brock's untimely deaths, Britney finally wised up and dumped K-Fed and Australia is on the verge of winning the Ashes back. But lets not forget the music. 2006 saw the release of some fantastic albums, and UK music magazine NME has just released it's list of the Top Albums of 2006.
Coming in at Number 1 was the Artic Monkeys - Whatever You Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, a fantastic album that NME described as "a stripped-down, punk rock record with every touchstone of Great British Music covered: The Britishness of The Kinks, the melodic nous of The Beatles, the sneer of Sex Pistols, the wit of The Smiths, the groove of The Stone Roses, the anthems of Oasis, the clatter of The Libertines". While NME does a penchant for overhyping everything, the fact remains that this is a bloody good album!
In a year when rock took centre stage, it's not surprising to see that rock albums dominated the list of Top Albums with artists such as The Strokes, Muse, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Aussie act Wolfmother make an appearance.
The Top 10 Albums of the Year according to NME are:
1. The Artic Monkeys - Whatever You Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
2. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones
3. Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
4. Hot Chip - The Warning
5. CSS - Cansei De Ser Sexi
6. Gnarls Barkley - St Elsewhere
7. Long Blondes - Someone to Drive You Home
8. The Strokes - First Impression of Earth
9. Kasabian - Empire
10. My Chemical Romance - Black Parade
Wolfmother came in at number 47 with their self-titled album.

Judging the Top 10 of anything is usually pretty tough, let alone in music where it is so much a subjective thing...
But who knows aye, maybe I just don't know my music and artists well enough!!
One 'grassroots' artists I've come across recently is Holly Throsby... Chilled sounds from the NSW South Coast... but I know there are a thousand thousands of others out there!

It's like judging the top 10 movies. It's so hard because it's all about personal preferences isn't it!
I haven't heard of Holly Throsby, but I might have to look around for her. There are some great 'grassroots' artists around at the moment. Thanks for the tip!

I must admit, I don't love Wolfmother. They're okay, but I'm a bit ambivalent about them.
Thanks for the comment!
