Australias Favourite Album - Top 100 List
December 7th 2006 03:32
On Sunday night, the ABC aired the show My Favourite Album, a countdown of, yep you guessed Australia's favourite albums!
For a few months before the show, the public could vote via the My Favourite Album website.
The Top 10 Favourite Albums of all time were:
1. Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon
2. Jeff Buckley Grace
3. Radiohead Ok Computer
4. The Beatles Abbey Road
5. The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
6. Nirvana Nevermind
7. Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin 4
8. Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magik
9. Meat Loaf Bat Out Of Hell
10. U2 The Joshua Tree
For the full listing, go to the My Favourite Album website.
There are no real surprises in the Top 10, other than Jeff Buckley's Grace. Not a bad album, but in the same league as some of the other albums in the list....eh? not so sure about that.
There are probably a number of people scratching their heads trying to work out how Meat Loaf made the Top 10. However, you should know, Bat Out of Hell was made 30 years ago and is still selling 200,000 albums per year! 200,000! Lets think about that for a second. If you released an album today and sold 200,000 copies, you wouldn't be unhappy (just ask Kevin Federline who sold less than 10,000 copies of his album). Not bad for a 30 year old album.
Some of the big surprises in the list for me were:
No Madonna or Michael Jackson???? - I don't care that Michael Jackson is a weird freak, surely Thrillerhad to be in the Top 100 albums of all time? And Madonna.....uh, hello, biggest selling female artist of all time????
No 95 - The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers. This is the Rolling Stones only showing in the countdown? How is that possible when they've been rocking out for about 300 years!
No 8. - Darren Hayes - The Tension & The Spark. There was neither tension nor spark in that album. And none of Savage Garden's albums made the list??? Now I wasn't big in to their music, but they were a shitload better than Darren Hayes is on his own!
And lastly, but most vilely, what the FUCK was Anthony Callea's album doing at NUMBER 32??????

I though that the panel, hosted by Myf, was particularly great. And the comments from noted Australians. "Bat Out Of Hell" was noted as being the Album you're ashamed to like. I can't agree as I loath it.
I did vote - for Flood, by They Might Be Giants. Didn't even break to top 100, but I didn't expect it to.

But I do have to also say that while I bought 8 & 10, embarrassing number 9 was actually aquired as a leftover from an ex-boyfriend.
Looking at the full list, I can also see that I have numbers:
14, 23, 33, 39, 41, 72, 74, 77, 79, 81, 84, 85, 92 & 96.
But yes, some of those albums do leave you scratching your head don't they!

Don't worry, I also own Bat Out of Hell. I don't think I bought it, I seem to have inherited it. But in saying that, I love it. It's wrong, I know. But I do.

I consider it a sign of a well rounded individual if their cd collection contains a few embarassing album choices. Though I do keep my Paula Abdul and New Kids on the Block cds away from my main collection!

I had considered voting - it would have been Soundgarden's Superunknown for sheer staying power. Highly addictive, still... nice to see it made it without my vote.
I had that Def Leppard album before I even had a CD player, got over that though (I was like 8yo). Great to see Neil Young and Carole King up there
