Sydney lads Hell City Glamours play dirty, sleazy, bluesy, punked-up glam rock n roll. I think they have done quite well at finding their niche in the local 'scene' and prove to be a pretty popular band amongst rockers and/or rollers. This EP showcases only 4 songs from the band and kicks off with the live favourite "White Trash, Hot Love." Immediately you know the band are about big guitars, big riffs and generally just rocking out. They get a bit bluesy with the rhodes 'pianner' during "On the Rocks" which is a nice touch, although I have trouble making any sort of connection with the band. I'm not sure, they do their thing well - it's a very solid mix of punk and glam rock - but I think the lyrics don't really do anything interesting. To me, having all the songs based around relationships and girls and rocknroll is a bit boring and just a bit over-done. Maybe I'm getting old and cynical, and I guess the songs are more for singing along to in a crowded sweaty pub rather than sitting at home and analysing...
Judging by the solid fanbase the band have acquired, I guess it's probably just me.
My favourite song on offer here would be the last one "Broke Down" (There seems to be a running them with things breaking...??). It displays the bands ability to sound a bit different, and has some nice riffery. I think it's also a bit more subtle, and doesn't give you everything it has upon first listen.
So what do I make of this EP? I'll say that it's not my thing really. This sort of rock just sounds very familiar to me, and for a band to be super-impressive they have to do something a bit left of centre. It seems the Glamours are probably very capable of this, but for Broken Glass, Beatless Hearts kind of stuck to the formula and played it safe. Who knows? Maybe they're not interested in 'mixing it up' and are comfortable playing straight up rock. That's fine, it's just my opinion.
I guess if you like big guitars, dirty vocals and that " I drink Jack Daniel's and smoke 2 packs of cigarettes for breakfast!" attitude - you will absolutely love this. They do it really really well, and while I do enjoy watching the band live (lots of fun!), I just have a hard time getting into the EP... I'd say have a listen and decide for yourself.
