Infinity on High is the latest offering from Chicago emo/pop/punk rockers Fall Out Boy. Even on the first listen, there's plenty to like about this album. Fall Out Boy's blend of pop-punk is easy to listen to, and by giving their 'emo' a dash of humour via their smart-arse lyrics stops their music from becoming dreary and depressing. It's accessible punk.
The humorous first single "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race" is a standout on the album. The song mixes a great beat with politically loaded lyrics. How can you resisit a song with a line such as "Bandwagon's full. Please catch another"?
The real strength of this album, is Fall Out Boy's ability to put together consistently catchy beats and strong hooks that will have you bopping along (though I'm pretty sure that young punks will never admit to 'bopping'......ever.......but I assure you, you'll bop). The lyrics of Pete Wentz are the other strength. His lyrics alternatively amuse and outrage listeners (mostly non-FOB fans). The weakness of the band definitely lies in their ballads. Most of the ballads on the album are mediocre at best. Lyrically, it's hard to criticise the ballads. Musically however, they lack direction and just falter a little. The notable exception to this is the song ""I've Got All This Ringing In My Ears And None On My Fingers" which is
On the other hand, there are songs such as "Thanks For The Memories" which may not be lyrically brilliant, but are muscial gems.
Another standout song is "The (After) Life of the Party". I'd describe the song as a speedy ballad. It's got a great punchy beat, coupled with slow almost spoken lyrics that makes the song completely different to the rest of the album.
Overall, this album is a punchy upbeat offering that fans of FOB will love. However, the album also offers enough that even those who aren't dogged fans of the band will find more than enough to enjoy. True haters of the band, will only find more to hate. But that probably suits FOB. It's not the riskiest album ever made, but it's a solid enjoyable listen. A great one for listening in your car.
