EXTRA LIMB

Sydney’s Extra Limb have been playing their brand of bass-line heavy pop-punk for the past few years, and have had a resurgence of sorts with a new drummer and a recording to boot. The six songs on this CD-R (a preview of their album, I believe) are catchy as hell. I haven’t heard a bunch of pop/punk songs I’ve liked so much in a long time. The band pulls influences from seminal bands such as Screechin’ Weasel, The Queers, and Propaghandi, but really infuse their own sound through Alex’s bass playing and unique (Australian!) vocals, sometimes squeezing about four times as many syllables in as one normally would.
These guys are just a great fun band. The music is easy to digest, but interesting enough to keep you listening. My favourite track would definitely be the upbeat “Disappointment” with tricky bass intro, super-catchy chorus and deceptively cool guitar solo. Lyrically, the band explores topics such as late night TV, the occasional political theme and other non-stagnant or cliché ideas. I really can’t stand generecy, so I’m glad Extra Limb are not a generic band.
As for quality, the production is pretty stripped back and bare, which suits the music fine. It’s gritty and raw without being awful or feeling bare. Everything has been mixed well, so it sounds great to my ears – my only complaint would be the kick drums sound, which is more of a ‘click’ than a ‘thud’ – but this is very minor and is not a deterrence to any other aspect of the demo.
Watch out for the three-piece as they release their album, I for one can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves.
