I had never heard of Eran James until he appeared on Rockwiz as one of the guest quiz team members late last year. After hearing him sing on the show, I jumped on the internet and hunted down his cd.
Eran James is a young white kid, who can sing soul with the best of them. Like Joss Stone, he's shown that soul is a mood and doesn't have an age limit or a particular skin colour.
Reviewing the Situation was released back in September 2004 when Eran was only 15 years old! The album contains 12 covers of soul classics and 1orginal song written by Eran himself. Click here to go to the Sanity music site and click on one of the songs. Listen and tell me he doesn't sound about 35!
The album starts out with the catchy "I Get Lifted", and you can't help but feel a little uplifted as you listen. Eran sings tracks such as "I Just Kissed My Baby", "Work To Do" and "Use Me" with all the worldliness of someone twice his age.
Listening to the album conjures images of dark, smoked filled jazz bars. By the time you're halfway through the album, you'll be craving a martini......even if you don't normally drink!
If I had one criticism of the album, it would be that it's hard to believe that Eran really does know how to "Let a Woman Be a Woman" and that he's "Tired of Being Alone". He was only 15 when he recorded the album afterall. But the songs and his singing of them, still ring true in spite of this. And in truth, soul has always been the playground of grownups, unlike pop music, so finding 'younger' songs for him to cover would have been difficult.
Despite his very young age, Eran is everything a soul singer should be. Smooth, smoky vocals, good looks, and an uncanny ability to make you feel that he's singing to you alone.
If you get the chance to have a listen to the album, don't hesitate to let Eran seduce you. Sure you'll feel guilty afterwards....after all you were just lusting after a 17 year old. But it's worth it.
